Three years ago there were two places to get matcha in Barcelona. Now nearly every neighbourhood has at least one dedicated bar, and most specialty coffee spots have added it to the menu. The quality gap between them is enormous.
We drink a lot of matcha, it’s half the reason we started running walks in this city. The eight spots below are the ones we come back to on our own time, sorted loosely by neighbourhood so you can build a route around wherever you’re staying.
Gràcia
Chill Matcha
Gràcia · Carrer de VerdiThe room is small and calm, which suits the name. Ceremonial grade whisked to order, no sugar unless you ask for it. Order the iced matcha with oat milk and take it to the square around the corner.
Usagui
Gràcia · Travessera de GràciaMore of a tea house than a café. They pour a proper usucha if you want to taste the powder on its own, and the hojicha latte is a good cold-weather order. Quiet on weekday mornings.
Eixample
Bonsai Matcha
Eixample · Carrer d'AragóThe most consistent latte on this list. Whatever the barista situation, the cup lands the same every time. Good pastries too, which is rarer than it should be for a matcha bar.
Niwa
Eixample · Carrer del Consell de CentBright, plant-filled, easy to sit in for an hour. Their sweet matcha is genuinely balanced rather than dessert-in-a-cup. Ask for the single-origin option if it’s on that week.
The old town
Takumi Matcha
Raval · Carrer de la Riera BaixaTiny counter on a street full of vintage shops. Takeaway-focused, fast, and the matcha is stronger than most, closer to how you’d drink it in Kyoto. Cash still preferred here.
Matchacha
El Born · Carrer dels Banys VellsA short walk from the Picasso Museum. The matcha soft serve is the thing to get in summer; the latte is solid year-round. Gets busy on weekend afternoons.
Ikenocha
Gòtic · Carrer d'AvinyóHidden down a narrow Gothic-quarter street. They take the whisking seriously and it shows. The cold brew matcha is worth trying if you find sweet versions too heavy.
La Papa
Born · Passeig del BornThe most relaxed of the bunch, with a few outdoor tables on the passeig. Not the strongest matcha on the list, but the best place to sit with one for a while.
How we picked these spots
Every spot on this list uses ceremonial or at least culinary-grade matcha powder, not the pre-sweetened kind. We also checked that oat milk is available at all of them. The order is loosely geographic, starting in Gràcia and working down through Eixample into the old town.
A few of these will have changed by the time you visit, new spots open here every month. We keep this guide current, so if something’s slipped or you’ve found one we’ve missed, tell us and we’ll go check it out.
